One Secret Victoria Couldn’t Help Me Keep: the Panty Horror Story

Green-w-Purple-Polka-Dots

This Panty Horror Story starts and ends in green undies…

Train wreck. You’ve seen someone’s panties when they didn’t want you to, right? Maybe it was the whale tail made by a thong, a visible panty line, or someone’s granny panties sticking out of the top of their low-rise pants…

Could you look away? Were you hypnotized? Were you embarrassed for the panty wearer?

I could’ve died the other day. One of my co-workers, someone super well respected that I just don’t know that well came into my work space at the office and basically spent the entirety of our 5 minute conversation looking down my as$ crack. Like how you might peer over a cliff into the abyss. He couldn’t look away. I was the train wreck.

Laundry day ignored meant I was wearing a super cute and super ridiculous green thong with purple polka dots, trim, and a purple lace up back. Totally ridiculous. Like the lorikeet (my new favorite bird).

Open back stool + skinny jeans + top that was just a bit too short for sitting in an open back stool in low cut skinny jeans + laundry day ignored = Good-God-when-will-this-conversation-end-and-how-long-will-I-be-reliving-it?

Sigh. I lived to tell the tale.

But it also made me think about wearing the right panties and how the perfect pair of panties is something you put on and only think about it if you want to. Which is why I love my Upitees so much. They’re so comfy and reliable, it’s almost like I’m putting on peace of mind.

I know I won’t be worrying about my panties when I wear them. So I can give my attention to everything else that needs it. And still be pleasantly surprised at how awesome it is to be wearing neon green panties (no polka dots, but with a screen print of the Eiffel Tower) when I take off the same pair of skinny jeans.

Snails ascending the Eiffel Tower. On panties!hjun

My beloved Upitees!

What about you? Any tales of how panties ruined your life (or maybe just your day)? Don’t you think this should be a recurring series? Please comment below with your tales of woe, or interest in sharing a story by writing a guest post. I look forward to seeing you in the comments!

Black Friday regrets.

Sunset at Bay Ocean Spit

Small Business Saturday Sunset at Bay Ocean Spit outside of Tillamook, Oregon

Hello hello!

How are you doing? Ready for the holidays? I’m still reeling from all the excitement around my second holiday season as an entrepreneur. It feels fantastic- thank you so much for all your holiday love and support- together we are already sending over 40 pairs of Upitees to women’s shelters around the country! I can’t wait to report on the final number in January!

In the meantime, I have a sale to announce!

I spent part of last week still thinking about Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday and all the brouhaha wrapped up in it. On the one hand, it feels contrary to my values, La Vie en Orange’s values, to participate in such blatant consumerism. On the other hand, giving holiday shoppers a handmade and independent alternative to the corporations feels really good and necessary. And I love a thoughtful gift.

Ultimately, I’m not sure where I land, but I do want to offer a one-day sale to folks who opted-out of the biggest shopping weekend of the year (like I did :)).  Use the discount code OptOut on Saturday, December 15 for 20% off your order :)
Thoughts? I’ll see you in the comments below :)
xoxo
P.S. Stay tuned for a giveaway and interview with the Non-Consumer Advocate on Sunday or Monday :)

Honoring

Sometimes mortality is just everywhere you look.

One of my mentors passed away unexpectedly this week.  He and his wife co-owned the Halloween costume factory I worked at for 5 summers during college.  He taught me how to calculate product prices and took me to my first trade show.  He was the very young grandfather of a good friend in high school, and back then I was scared of him the way that most dads who’re men’s men are scary when you’re in high school.  I grew to love and respect and cherish him during our time together, and now I get to miss him and worry about his family and honor his memory.

Last week, I was asked to honor the memory of a pair of twin sisters’ Grammie.  They approached me to make undies out of her knit nightgowns, and I couldn’t have been more touched.  It’s the sweetest, most heartbreaking thing I’ve been asked to do in this business.  I feel privileged and honored to help them celebrate her life and memory.  The nightgowns are adorable:  one is light pink, another light blue paisley and the third is animal print.  I like to picture the woman who used to wear them and imagine how tickled she would be at her granddaughters.

I’m still lucky enough to be able to call my Granma, so I gave her a ring (totally old school :)) to say hello after I first heard from the sisters.  She was happy to hear from me, and started telling me about all the things I’ll inherit from her sewing room when she passes.  She also let me know she had a bunch of nightgowns she thought would be perfect for underwear someday.  (Granma is the reason making underwear is normal in my family, but that’s for another post.  :))  More often than not these days, she’s thinking of things we’ll get or how her stuff will take care of us after she goes.  It wasn’t always this way, but then, she and my Granpa have only recently started to outlive their closest friends.  Life stages are so much more interesting now that I’m old enough to pay attention (another life stage?!? :)).

If you have a Granma or a Grammie or a Nana or a mentor or teacher or loved one, maybe you’ll drop them a line this week?  Just to say hello.

Etsy’s Front Page!

Ohmygoodness!  So exciting- a pair of my undies were featured on Etsy Australia’s front page on Saturday afternoon! Woot woot!

Can you spot the Upitees?

So, if you’re not too familiar with Etsy, this is a pretty big deal (and my first time being on any front page).  Etsy users curate treasuries, and gluten-free baker Air from Occasional Sweets made this one.  It was picked for the front page, and there you have it!

Thanks so much for celebrating with me!

Have you ever made a treasury on Etsy?  Are you addicted?  I haven’t made a treasury yet, but plan on starting as soon as I get back from vacation.  I’d love to hear about your experiences- please comment below!  :)

Whoa. How does my sewing machine do that?

This sewing machine served me for nearly 30 years! (and my mom for 10+ years before I was even around :))

Hello hello!  How do you feel?  We’ve done a lot in the last few weeks- learned about what the marks on home sewing patterns mean, picked up some fabric basics including the ever illusive grainline, and just last week cut out pattern pieces for a supercute upcycled shopping bag with my husbie Zac.

This week off we’re headed to the sewing machine!  We won’t sew yet- but we’ll spend a couple of weeks getting to know our machines (thanks for sticking with me through this delayed gratification).  This week we’ll figure out how a sewing machine works (for reals) and then next week we’ll thread our machine, bobbin and all!

All sewing machines have the same basic parts and pieces.  Your sewing machine probably won’t look like mine (pictured above).  This is my momma’s sewing machine from college.  I burned the motor out on it earlier this year making undies (I’m still planning on getting it fixed), but it has served her since

  • the 70s for all sorts of amazing and ridiculous outfits,
  • the outfits she made my brother and I in the 80s and the Barbie clothes I churned out.  Oh, and the scrunchees.  Thousands.  Probably.  :)
  • the 90s when I started sewing more than her and busted out lots of purses, homecoming dresses and body pillow cases for the entire senior class (only 55 of us),
  • and the 2000s- through college:  a fashion degree and countless fashion shows, three wedding dresses (eye candy on the portfolio page :)), and then starting my own business.  I flipping love this machine.

I’m not sure that was worth a bulleted list, but four decades of sewing?  I wanted to show this machine some serious respect.  :)

But how does it work?  So super basic- every sewing machine has two threads: one that comes from the top and goes through the needle into the fabric, and a second thread, wound on a bobbin that lives below the needle, feed dogs, and throat plate (we’ll get there, I promise!).  This diagram shows the dance that happens between the needle and bobbin threads.  It’s very much based on one in the Reader’s Digest Complete Guide to Sewing, an awesome reference book that I turn to time and again.

So this shows how the needle and bobbin thread intertwine to make a stitch. Click on the image to check it out full size.

Make sense?  The upper thread kind of loops around the lower thread and is pulled tight to make the stitch creating awesomeness.  :)

You’ll see below a photo of my Momma’s machine with all the parts labeled.  Every machine is a little bit different, but works in essentially the same way.  Hopefully you’ll be able to guess which parts of your machine correspond with which parts of mine!  :)

The bits and pieces, in all their glory!  Click to enlarge the image.

When sewing, you’ll be most concerned with the stitch length and width regulators and  the back stitch control.  You’ll have seen the hand wheel, presser foot, feed dogs (I love feed dogs!) and back stitch control all in action in our tutorial:  How to Sew a Straight Line.

Next week we’ll get to know many of these parts a lot better when we thread the machine and then away we go!  :)  Nothing’s holding us back in our quest to make an upcycled shopping bag :)

See you then!  Comment below if you have any questions, and subscribe on the homepage to get an email about future posts :)

Whew!

Whew! After raising money for my day job non-profit org auctioning off some custom sewing (in my wedding dress!), I couldn't even stop to change before diving into some data entry with Z! Anything for a good cause! :)

Dear Readers,

My week has been delightful and draining.  Friday (for my day job), I put on my non-profit’s biggest fundraiser of the year and helped raise almost $90k!  It has left me exhausted, but excited that it’s over and that I have my life back.  :)  I’ve spent my recovery time this week on the couch dreaming about all the exciting things I have planned for business this summer:  Men’s briefs, then boxers, toddler undies, women’s briefs (and maybe thongs?) and transgender men undies.  Maybe in that order.  :)  Recovery time has also been spent on an obscene number of hours of New Girl, The Office, Glee, and GCB.  Seriously shameless.  :)  In my defense, I was too tired to even nap out in the sun on my balcony.  That’s how I know it’s bad :)

I saw this tutorial on “What is Etsy?” from Indie Maven, and had an “Ah Ha!” moment.  Of course!  What is Etsy?  :)  Andrea does a great job walking us through it!

At La Vie en Orange, I’ve loved making these tutorials on reading a home sewing pattern and sewing a straight line, but I’d love to hear about what you’re looking for?  Why do you swing by?  Please comment below.

In upcoming posts, I’m excited to explore my product pricing, more on sustainability, whatever inspiration or silliness moves me, and upcoming new product lines… :) (Check out those links for previous posts on similar topics :))

What do you think?  I’d love to hear- please comment below!  I’ll see you there :)
